SkooNet is secure communication for the whole school community, built on Matrix, the open messaging standard used by government and enterprise deployments, rather than a proprietary chat system you cannot audit or leave.
Why the open standard matters
Because SkooNet speaks Matrix, the protocol is public and independently implemented, the platform can federate, and an institution is not locked into a format it cannot read. Conceptually it is close to Element or FluffyChat, but purpose-built for schools: rooms follow the school structure, and users and rooms are provisioned automatically from the platform rather than created by hand.
What it does
- Real-time messaging between students, parents, teachers and administrators.
- Announcements and alerts targeted at organisational structures, course classes or individuals.
- Rich text and file attachments.
- School social networking features that keep conversation inside a moderated environment.
- Smart notification routing and digest summaries so people are not overwhelmed.
Security and safeguarding
SkooNet supports end-to-end encrypted rooms, where content is not readable by the server. Sessions are token-based and centrally revocable. Institutions with safeguarding duties can configure retention and oversight of school communication; where they do, the institution informs its users, and our Privacy Policy sets out how this is handled.
